Should i buy a midi keyboard

Music back in the day was not affordable because of having to purchase this kind of gear. However, now with computers, sounds and programs are amazingly affordable in compared to what it used to be. Computer programmers create synthesizers, other known as VSTs , which allow you to have a sound module within your computer! This allows for quick and easy sound design , editing of the loop itself, and very fast beatmaking! However, you will always hear a debate on how analog hardware gear always sounds warmer and richer.

Like Nexus 2. USB also makes the home studio set up quick, affordable, and organized looking. A controller is more geared towards doing cool automation effects, or it could even be something like a drum pad.

MIDI is meant to control your music program with ease. This means they do not have sounds within them by them self. So when buying the MIDI keyboard, bringing it home, and realizing.. What did I just buy!? The sounds you play are through programs like VSTs , or your one-hit samples sounds. MIDI is the way to go for ease of use, affordability, while still creating extremely high quality beats.

Purchasing a hardware keyboard, in my opinion, is pointless in this generation. These are essential, and allow you to get into a great workflow when it comes to creating loops, stopping, pausing, repeating the loop over and over; just in general, it helps your workflow. Another thing to keep in mind is having a pitch bend wheel and a mod wheel.

The knobs I do recommend because this allows you to change controls on VSTs, manipulating sounds hands-on, which is always fun. Now, I have the Axiom 49 2nd Generation which is great! But I just want to clarify it before we continue, to avoid any mistake or misunderstanding. There is a lot of information here! It has no speakers nor audio outputs, so you cannot connect your speakers nor your headphones to the controller. It should be connected most of the time to a computer with a USB cable, and it is used to control a music production software installed in the computer.

I like to compare a MIDI controller with a computer mouse. You can use the music production software with your mouse, as you do with any other software. But if you have a MIDI controller, you can control the software in a much easier way and also in a more creative way. The MIDI controller allows you to express yourself while producing music. The first way a controller is used is for music production in a studio or home studio. MIDI controllers of all sizes and shapes are used in studios to enhance the production process.

Not only keyboards, but other kind of controllers, such as drum pads, MIDI guitars, MIDI flutes, and huge and expensive consoles to do the recording, mixing and mastering.

For the beginner or for a home studio owner, a MIDI keyboard controller is really useful to enhance the production work flow and to add expression to his or her music. The other way MIDI controllers are usually used is for live performances.

Talking about beginners, the keyboard is used to learn how to play the piano. When we start learning, we typically get a piano keyboard to practice at home after we had a class. For more experienced players, the keyboards are used for live performances, from small concerts, to church ceremonies, to huge music events. We can also use a keyboard to practice with headphones, when we need to be quiet because it is late or because someone in the house is studying, watching TV, reading or sleeping.

The keyboard I love and always recommend for beginners and to have at home is the portable Yamaha keyboard. It is great.

The sound is much better compared to other brands like Casio. It is comfortable and I love the sensitivity on its keys to add expression to your performance. It is the best cheap option. You can check the current price on Amazon in this link. As I said before, if you are thinking of buying something to learn, practice and just play, a keyboard like this is the best option.

Because it is just easy and fast to start playing. A MIDI controller means too much work to start practicing, and that is not good for when you have to be consistent. To be quite honest, this one might even contain more features than a beginner would need, but because the quality and price are on point, I had to include this. The Hammer 88 has fully-assignable MIDI buttons, pitch-bend, and modulation wheels, sustain pedal, secondary pedal, and expression pedal inputs.

Though all these features might sound impressive, it is designed more for the players who more are concerned with compositional accuracy rather than editing or tweaking. But if your music plans are more geared towards realistic playing and less on envelopes and automation, this just might be the one for you. But once you get some experience and you want to inflict more of a human touch into your productions, a Midi Keyboard just might be what you need.

But not only can it humanize your music, it can also save you a lot of time. Speaking from experience, I find melodies a lot easier when I can just play them and get instant feedback. Your website is awesome! Wrote alot of songs, but now that I got one, I would never go back! Thank u! Great article! Found it after reading your DAW article.

Personally I have an Axiom 25 and I love it! Thanks for sharing this article. Hey Javier and hello to Peru! Thanks Petri I will take a look on youtube… I liked it very much the axiom 61 … so i think i am gonna try m-audio product and see how it works..

I would recommend it, it is a high quality product, but it all depends on your price point. As Petri mention he uses the Oxygen This is likely the most helpful article on keyboard controllers i have found yet. I have a simple question that was not covered in this post.

I operate with a mac with snow leopard and my programs are garageband and ableton. Are most midi keyboard controllers able to be used on macs and with this software? To your question: afaik most MIDI keyboards will work in mac and Ableton live as well and most likely in Garageband too. At least M-Audio products will work. Just check before you purhcase it says it supports mac. Primo Lux Turnpoint — hey, not bad for a beginner! I like the very basic early mid 90s trance stuff most — like the age of love stella , but this is good.

Is there much you would change on it if you did it now? Is there anything you really wish you could change about it? On keyboards, my own experience is that getting one makes a great deal of difference. The whole music thing then becomes a whole lot more fun and engaging. A MIDI keyboard is no panacea for simply not being very good. Definitely helps though. And yep, playing things with MIDI keyb is a lot more interesting than with mouse! I have a question as a newbie.

In regards to a midi-controller and the weighted key issue, does having weighted keys impact your ability to make good electronic music?
