But because bands occupied a critical role in the heyday of classic rock decades ago, people started associating that structure with the music itself. The statement that rock music is dead does hold some truth. The formula of vocals, guitar, bass and drums worked well for rock music in the beginning, but many modern artists now see it as a jumping-off point.

Instead of using a precise algorithm for what rock music should sound like, contemporary artists think outside the box and branch into different styles. Even those who no longer believe in rock music are inspired by the artists that helped popularize the genre. Rock music is, and always has been, about expression. In a new world, rock musicians found new ways to express themselves. Elizabeth is a junior at the University of Pittsburgh majoring in English and French.

In addition to writing, Elizabeth loves cooking, traveling and music. They are chart-topping because they are relatable in much the same way Radiohead is, albeit more explicitly. They sing about the modern experience of simultaneous loss of self and intense self-awareness. They sing about the inability to connect with other people. They fuse genres, transitioning sometimes into rap and sometimes into rock, navigating both with expertly engineered direction.

It is the antithesis of messily vivacious rock. It is fundamentally clinical. In a way, I was right. Rock music is dead. Or, more accurately, classic rock is dead. Their period of questioning culminated in the intensely introspective great rock bands of our generation —not only Radiohead and 21 Pilots, but also the National, Death Cab for Cutie, and Arcade Fire.
