We also have 2 dictation sentences each week that they have to learn for the test on Friday. All together, my tests are worth around 33 points. I'm going to be adding a sentence this year.

Depending on the student, I adapt the list: either a shortened list or a list with more difficult words depending on need. Then I give 5 sight words. I follow the system Beth Newingham uses to determine sight words. I am changing to 20 words in all. I had 3 versions of spelling words per pattern and differentiated as needed. This year I am going to teach a phonics lesson for the week and the students will pick 5 words from that pattern to learn and then 5 words for their "words to learn list" and I will have the students partner up to give spelling tests to each other.

I wanted to make sure my plan was appropriate. It seems in the range of what you all do. I give a pretest and when I notice someone has misspelled 5 or 6 words, I have them stop. Some weeks I might have someone with 6 words, one with 9 words, two with 12 words, and the rest with the full list. Post as a guest or become a member today.
